Muchas Gracias Amigos de Palena
"So long as we eat our bread together, we shall have sufficient even for the least. Not until one person desires to keep his own bread for himself does hunger ensue." Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Palena offers the same rhythm daily. Literally the school children rehearse an identical drum pattern each afternoon. It never changes and never gets more fluid. For generations this pattern faithfully fills the community's plywood walls and decorative outer structures. It's constance is Latin America's habitual hospitality. No one carries their own snack or their own water bottle. Palena and its counterparts exist in a shared existence. And this existence inconspicuously challenges taught independence. Needs do not freight burden on my Palena friends. In fact an absence of need catches curiosity. From now on I hope to remember to hike with a large piece of bread and extra campo cheese. In Patagonia I know someone will bring the water, just as unquestionably the children are beating Palena's rhythm today.
